Batch No. 025

Poured by hand on the bench in Pasadena, California. One small batch takes most of a day, and we wouldn't shorten it.

A new approach to skincare

A balm built from the same fats your skin already makes, in a vessel that protects it.

We don't keep an open shop because we don't keep open inventory. Each jar is rendered, infused, clarified, and poured the slow way and reserved the slow way too.

A letter from the bench

It started with my own shelf.

I'm Lee, a musician and the founder of ORB. This started as a personal reckoning. I began pulling labels apart. I read about toxicology and endocrine disruptors. I learned that "fragrance" is a legal black box for hundreds of synthetic compounds. The deeper I looked, the less I could keep using what I had been using.

So I started cleansing. Beauty products first. Then cleaning supplies. Then candles, laundry, anything that touched my body daily. I detoxed my home and rebuilt what I put on my skin from the ground up.

There was also the cost. Not just financial, though that was real. A serum for this, an eye cream for that, a treatment for something else. Each product promising something specific, none of them quite delivering. The routine itself had become the problem: too many steps, too many ingredients I couldn't vouch for, obscene amounts of money spent on things that kept multiplying. I wanted one thing I believed in completely.

The hardest part wasn't cutting things. It was finding a replacement that actually worked: something that felt refined, smelled sophisticated, and didn't ask me to give up the rituals I love. So I started making my own. Slow-rendered tallow at my kitchen counter in Pasadena. A short list of botanicals. Months of testing on my own face before I'd give a jar to anyone.

What I found was that tallow is one of the most skin-compatible lipids in nature, rich in the same fats my skin already makes. Lamb is the one that feels made for the face: lighter, silkier, quicker to melt in. One step, and a short list of ingredients I can vouch for completely.

Tamar, my friend and fellow mom, a filmmaker, was the first person I shared a jar with. She came back asking for more. So we made more.

ORB is what we couldn't find anywhere else: something that works, that you can trust, and that finally simplifies the whole thing.

The formulation

Slower. Deeper. More intentional.

What is in the jar, and why each choice takes us longer than the alternative would. Four decisions, made the long way.

i.

Why tallow

Tallow is unlike any plant-based oil. It is rich in the same fatty acids as the skin's own sebum, and a 2024 peer-reviewed review of the research concluded that tallow looks to be biocompatible with skin.

It absorbs readily rather than sitting on the surface. Naturally rich in the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Shelf-stable without preservatives.

Energetically: grounding, ancestral, restorative.

ii.

Why lamb

Lamb tallow feels made for the face: softer, lighter, silkier, melting in the moment it touches skin. That is our experience of it, and our customers'. Symbolically, lamb carries the energy of gentleness and purity.

We use grass-fed lamb suet, the firm internal fat from around the kidneys. It is the hardest fat the animal carries, which is what makes the balm hold its texture.

Nothing diluted. Nothing compromised.

iii.

The vessel

ORB is jarred in Miron violet glass. Its maker designs it to block visible light while letting parts of the UV and infrared spectrum through, to help preserve what is inside.

The deep onyx tone holds an otherworldly depth. Heavy glass, made to be kept long after the balm is gone.

iv.

Lavender, infused

Rather than adding lavender essential oil, we slow-infuse the tallow with lavender. The fat takes up the full spectrum of the flower, scent and all, over hours rather than seconds.

Infusion weaves the plant into the base: rounder, softer, and present in every layer of the balm rather than resting on top.

Beauty as ceremony. The body, returned to itself.

Sustainability

Beyond simply sustaining.

Everything we source, leave out, package, and pour aims to give back more than it takes. Slow, small, deliberate.

i.

One jar, not ten

One balm doing the work of a shelf full of products is the least wasteful thing we know how to make. Fewer jars, fewer steps, less bought and thrown away.

ii.

Small batch, no waste

We pour only what's been reserved. Nothing sits on a shelf for months losing potency. The waiting list is a feature, not a bug.

iii.

Bought by the batch

We buy what a single batch needs, when we need it. No standing orders, no pallets, nothing sitting in storage for months before it reaches a jar.

iv.

Nothing synthetic

No preservatives. No fillers. No fragrance "stabilizers." Tallow is naturally shelf-stable, and the rest of the list is short enough to read in one breath.

v.

The kitchen is the factory

The suet arrives raw and leaves as jars, from the same address in Pasadena. Nothing is trucked out to be processed and trucked back.

vi.

A slow business

We aren't trying to scale fast. We're trying to make something good, and to keep making it the same way, for a long time.
